Another month, another contest! Thank you to Ciara O'Neal and Kaitlyn Sanchez for hosting and to all of the lovely agents, editors, and authors for offering prizes. The challenge is to choose a spring-themed GIF and write a story in 150 words or less. I hope you enjoy the tale of little Terry who just wants to wake up early and get to school.

THE EARLY WORM
Word Count: 119
By Kirsten Leestma

Terry wriggled out of bed.

"Terry! Stay asleep!”
“Mom, I want to get up!”
Terry crawled to the bathroom and creeeeaaaked open the cabinet.
“Terry, I hope you’re not brushing your teeth!”
“No, Mom!” he said as he spit into the sink. Terry inched down the tunnel.
“Terry, what are you doing? Do you want to be early for school?”
“Yes.”
“Why, Terry?”
“Ms. Mulch is taking us on a field trip and I’ve never been to a field before.”
“I must put my tail down. You cannot be early for school!”
“Ugh, whyyy, Mom?”
She nodded towards the cross-stitched pillow from his great-grandworm that read, “The early bird gets the worm. The early worm is out of luck.”
